Fez’s That ‘90s Show Return Ignores His Most Deadly Connection To Red & Kitty (Did They Forget After 17 Years?)

Writer Owen Barnes

Fez reunites with Red and Kitty in That ‘90s Show after starting a new relationship, but the Forman couple forgets to mention a key ‘70s Show detail.

Red and Kitty in That 90s Show with Fez in That 70s Show

Fez's return in That '90s Show completely forgets an essential connection to Red and Kitty Forman through his time in That '70s Show. Wilmer Valderrama appears in three episodes of That '90s Show, the spinoff sequel that follows Eric and Donna's teenage daughter, Leia Forman (Callie Haverda). Aside from Valderrama, Topher Grace and Laura Prepon reprise their That '70s Show roles, as does Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, briefly cameoing as Kelso and Jackie in the spinoff's first season. Red and Kitty, however, have more substantial roles in That '90s Show, allowing Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp a new chance at being the ultimate scene-stealers of another teen sitcom.

Before making his notable return to That '90s Show, Fez was remembered as a fan favorite on That '70s Show. He was a core member of the friend group for all eight seasons of the original show. Though the characters knew Fez's real name, the name "Fez" was a play on the acronym "FES" or "Foreign Exchange Student." Where Fez came from was also never revealed, which became a long-running mystery in the series that continued in That '90s Show. Another gag was Fez's romances and the struggles he endured in the dating world. While the most discussed relationship was Fez and Jackie's season 8 romance, one particular fling is totally ignored in That '90s Show during a key moment.

Kitty Ignores The Fact That Fez Was Actually Her Son-In-Law In That '70s ShowThat 90s Show Fez Wilmer Valderrama

Fez first appears in That '90s Show season 1, episode 2, "Free Leia," revealing himself to be dating the Forman's next-door neighbor Sherri (Andrea Anders). In the next episode, "Lip Smackers," Sherri reveals that the man she is dating is actually Fez, who she considers a local celebrity. Red and Kitty surprise Sherri by saying they know Fez well, but they leave out a key fact: Fez is their former son-in-law after he was briefly married to Laurie (Lisa Robin Kelly) in That '70s Show season 5.

While Fez may have had romantic feelings for Laurie, the marriage only occurred to block his possible deportation following a vandalism arrest. Laurie even celebrated the marriage by going on their honeymoon with another man, but it was successful in helping Fez stay in the US. However, Red and Kitty don't mention this important moment in their past with Fez. Though they might still view Fez as one of Eric's oldest friends, it would have been relevant information considering Sherri was seeking advice for her complicated relationship with Fez. Granted, Red and Kitty may have had an excellent reason for ignoring the fact that Fez is their ex-son-in-law.

Kitty Forgetting Fez & Laurie's Marriage Has A Perfect In-Universe ExplanationThat 90s show stars Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Red and Kitty Forman sitting at kitchen table together

When Fez revealed his marriage to Laurie in That '70s Show's season 5 finale, Red responded with a heart attack. Just learning that his daughter married Fez nearly killed him, so it makes perfect sense why Red and Kitty may have wanted to forget that the marriage ever happened in the first place. The heart attack is the perfect in-universe explanation for ignoring their deeper connection to Fez in That '90s Show. It was a dark time for Red and the Forman family, and considering the marriage reveal was a direct cause of the heart attack, it's justifiable that Red and Kitty would want to forget it ever happened.

Even without acknowledging the son-in-law fact, Kitty still shares a special relationship with Fez, who viewed her as a mother figure throughout That '70s Show. Kitty tries to steer Sherri in the right direction regarding Fez, but she also can't help but protect him too since it's what she's always done with Eric and his friends. With Fez vowing to save his relationship with Sherri at the end of the finale, it seems likely that Valderrama will be involved in That '90s Show season 2. The show might continue to leave out important aspects of his past, but Fez and his wild relationships will continue to be a highlight.
