Every Time A Heel Won In The WrestleMania Main Event, Ranked
Isabella Bartlett
WrestleManiais often a show where huge storylines and journeys come to an end, and in professional wrestling, it is more often than not that the babyface prevails as the triumphant hero. The main event of WrestleMania is the biggest WWE match of the year, and seeing a babyface stand tall has ensured that several WrestleManias have been closed in a spectacular way.

It is very rare that a heel wins in the main event of WrestleMania - in fact, it took 16 years for this to happen for the first time. It has happened now and again over the years, all with varying levels of success, but some of these victories were better or worse than others.
7 The Miz, WrestleMania 27
The Miz vs. John Cena may be one of the least interesting WrestleMania main events of all time, and it didn’t help that the finish was a complete mess. After both getting counted out, The Rock restarted the match, but would then turn against Cena, allowing The Miz to get the win. On paper, a new star like The Miz getting a victory in his first WrestleMania main event sounds like a good thing, however he was not the focus even in victory.
The Rock would lay out The Miz after the match, standing tall to end the show. The Miz couldn’t have been more of an afterthought here, as his role was just as cannon fodder to set the groundwork for The Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 28 one year later.
6 Triple H, WrestleMania 16
This marked the first time ever that heel won in the main event of WrestleMania, and the bewildered crowd reaction just goes to show how peculiar it was. It must be said that the main event of WrestleMania 16 was quite an uninteresting one, as the “McMahon In Every Corner” storyline was a mess, though the fact that this was quite an underwhelming main event meant that Triple H retaining his WWE Title wasn’t such a massive let down.
The match was simply average, though the Attitude Era crowd did ensure that it was better than it should have been, and the inclusion of more over stars like Mick Foley and The Rock helped a lot. The Rock should have gotten his WrestleMania moment here and won the match, and this is the biggest peeve with Triple H’s win.
5 Brock Lesnar, WrestleMania 34
The match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 34 was not good. In fact, it is up there with one of the worst main events of all time. Even with a lot of blood and some big moves, it was slow, plodding, and a finisher fest. The only positive was that fans were happy that Reigns didn’t win the match.

Reigns may have been the babyface going in, but at this point in time, fans were viciously opposed to him getting pushed to the main event scene, and it brought about a big pop when Lesnar hit a final F-5 and scored the victory. This was by no means a good main event, but in terms of a heel winning in the last match on the card, it ranks higher than some of the others.
4 Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 38
For the third time, Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar fought in the main event of WrestleMania in 2022, though this time the roles were reversed as Reigns was the dominant heel and Lesnar was the babyface. The match itself was nothing too special, and things were kept pretty basic and simple, though it wasn’t bad.
Reigns won the match here, unifying the Universal and WWE Championships to become the Undisputed Champion. This was the correct decision considering Reigns was the younger and (at the time) more regular performer than Lesnar.
3 Steve Austin, WrestleMania 17
Going into WrestleMania 17, Steve Austin was a babyface. However, towards the end of his match against The Rock, he aligned with Mr. McMahon and turned heel, shocking the world as he shook hands with his sworn enemy and won the match.
This was certainly one of the most shocking endings to a wrestling show in history, as seeing the number one babyface turn heel was crazy. However, his heel turn in hindsight wasn’t necessarily the best decision, so that should be taken into account when comparing this heel win to some of the others in a WrestleMania main event. This will likely be number one for many, but there are some others that just about beat it when considering the context of their wins.
2 Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 37
It took turning heel for Roman Reigns to truly feel like the number one star in the company. Over the years, there have been major babyfaces like Hulk Hogan, John Cena, and Steve Austin who have been the faces of WWE, but Reigns has managed to get to that point as a bad guy, which is quite unprecedented.

At WrestleMania 37, he competed against Edge and Daniel Bryan in a brilliant main event, but ultimately stood tall after pinning both men at the same time. This was a huge statement by Reigns, as this cemented him properly as ‘the guy’. Even though he was a heel, it was the right call to have him close WrestleMania 37. This is certainly up there with the best heel victories in the history of the event, as he looked like an absolute beast in the way he defeated two fellow legends of the business.
1 Seth Rollins, WrestleMania 31
Not only is Seth Rollins’ victory the best heel win in WrestleMania main event history, it is up there with the best finishes to WrestleMania full stop. WWE had booked themselves into a corner at this event, as fans didn’t want Roman Reigns forced into being WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and they also didn’t want Brock Lesnar to continue his part-time reign as champion as not seeing the title for months on end was very jarring.
In stepped Mr. Money in the Bank Seth Rollins, who interrupted the main event, inserted himself into the match, and won the belt. This was a chaotic ending to what was a physical and thrilling matchup. Fans were overjoyed at not just seeing someone other than Reigns win, but seeing something so crazy and unpredictable too. Rollins may have been a heel, but he was treated with an enormous reaction and ovation as he closed WrestleMania 31 looking like an absolute star.
