New Jack had a pretty simple character throughout his ECW run. He was just a mean, mean dude who talked nasty and delivered gruesome violence inside the ring. Some of the brutal and controversial ECW moments, scripted or not, involved New Jack, and according to people around him, he was just like that in real life as well.

Paul Heyman had trouble controlling him and New Jack had no problem starting trouble with whoever pissed him off. After ECW went under, WWE didn’t want to touch him and for understandable reasons. That’s a guy that even Vince McMahon would have trouble controlling, but despite all the controversy attached to his name, work, and legacy, New Jack was a star, and he had no problem getting bookings on the indie scene.
New Jack Stabbed William Jason Lane After He Was Hit With a Stiff Shot
The former ECW superstar continued busting people up but in 2004, but a particularly nasty incident led to New Jack spending three weeks in jail. ECW was the land of the extreme, but there were certain limitations on what wrestlers could do. Some things were too brutal, even for ECW, such as stabbing someone with a knife. New Jack never did that in ECW but then during an indie show in Florida he crossed the line
A promotion by the name of Thunder Wrestling Federation had brought New Jack over for a match against William Jason Lane. Lane was a green wrestler and had no idea on how to deliver worked punches, and so during the opening minutes of the match, Lane struck New Jack with a few stiff shots to the nose. New Jack, in response, pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed Lane in the back and neck several times. Lane collapsed to the mat and rolled out of the ring but New Jack, still irate, followed him and stomped on him a few times. The other people present at the scene intervened and saved Lane from further abuse, and possibly death.

New Jack was taken in by the police and charged with multiple felony counts. During the investigation, Jack claimed that the entire thing was a work and that he had met Lane in the back, and the two had agreed to do the spot. The promoter of the event, however, said that the match was not booked to be a hardcore match and nobody saw it coming. New Jack probably flew in a rage when he was hit and nobody saw it coming.
Lane Did Not Press Charges Against New Jack And Started Training With Him
William Jason Lane dropped the charges against New Jack in exchange for working alongside him and being trained by him. Despite this horrific incident, New Jack continued to get indie bookings, and he still wrestled several matches over the next couple of years. The other guy involved, William Jason Lane, was not seen again.
After being released from jail, New Jack was asked about the incident in an interview. He expressed no remorse about what he had done and clarified that he only stabbed Lane nine times, not sixteen times as said in the news. Once again, New Jack repeated the claim that the match was a work and Lane wanted to bleed during the match. Wanting to bleed and getting stabbed in the neck are two very, very different things though.
