Earl Thomas Returns To Seahawks after Failed Trade With Cowboys

Writer Daniel Cobb

Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas has ended his holdout and will report to the team as they prepare to take on the Denver Broncos in Week 1, per Josina Anderson of ESPN.com.

The news came shortly after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Dallas Cowboys offered a second-round pick for Thomas. However, the Seahawks demanded more than that.

Thomas enters the final season of a four-year, $40 million contract, and he's set to make $8.5 million in 2018, per Spotrac.com. Thomas wrote a piece for The Players' Tribune in August, asking the Seahawks to either pay him or trade him.

But after a lengthy holdout, Thomas decided to end it and return to a Seattle team that strongly needs his skills and leadership. The Seahawks moved on from Pro Bowler Richard Sherman in the offseason, while cutting loose Jeremy Lane, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril. Fellow star safety Kam Chancellor announced his intentions to retire due to a nagging neck injury.

While Khalil Mack continued his holdout with the Oakland Raiders (eventually traded to the Chicago Bells), and Le'Veon Bell continues his with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thomas finally gave in and will honor the final year of his deal.

The final member of the Legion of Boom had two interceptions and six passes defended for the Seahawks last season. However, they missed the postseason for the first time since 2011, due in large part to a string of injuries on the defense. Thomas missed two games, but was named to his sixth Pro Bowl.

There's a good chance this is Thomas' final season in Seattle, unless the front office suddenly decides to give him an extension. Another strong season from Thomas could convince Seahawks GM John Schneider to pay his Pro Bowl safety. Otherwise, the 29-year-old will be one of the most coveted free agents in the spring.
