Draymond Green Says He Needs To Be NBA’s Defensive Player Of The Year

Writer Michael Hansen

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green already has three NBA Championship rings and one Defensive Player of the Year Award on his resume, but that's enough to satisfy the 28-year-old.

Following Golden State's 131-121 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, Green emphasized his desire to win a second Defensive Player of the Year Award this season.

"I need that," Green said, via ESPN's Nick Friedell. "I need that bad. Real bad. I made second-team all-defense last year. I'm pissed about that still. I'll be pissed until I right that, so that's a serious goal of mine this year. And I'm on it every night."

Green won the award in 2017 - leading the league in steals that year - as the Warriors cruised to their second NBA Championship in three years. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017.

But Green is playing for more than just the hardware itself. Friedell cited ESPN colleague Bobby Marks' report that if Green wins the DPOY Award, he'd be eligible for a maximum $235 million extension over five years in 2020. Marks noted that with Stephen Curry already under a super max contract, the Warriors can only hand out one more of those contracts.

Klay Thompson is a free agent after this season, and though it's expected he'll stay with the Warriors, the four-time All-Star won't come cheap - even if he signs a hometown discount.Kevin Durant has also expressed his desire to get paid big money this offseason, so that essentially rules out him taking a discount to stay with Golden State. If the Warriors manage to sign both KD and Thompson to long-term deals this offseason, it could lead to Green's departure.Green is averaging 8.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 8.1 assists and two steals per game this season. He's on the right path to winning another DPOY award, but even if he doesn't get it, Green will be setting himself up for a nice pay day down the road.
