Doink's Krusty Parallels And Suspicious Death Covered On Dark Side Of The Ring

Writer Matthew Cannon

Dark Side of the Ring season four marched on this week with what might have been the most anticipated episode so far. This week's edition covered Matt Borne, the wrestler best known for portraying Doink the Clown. You tell non or new fans there used to be a clown wrestler, they probably think of a fun, amusing character, but Borne wasn't that.

The Doink And Krusty Parallels

Borne was a terrific wrestler and there's a reason we still remember Doink 30 years after his run. Vince McMahon coming up with the gimmick and hand-picking Borne to portray it was no accident. Tom Prichard told a story on this week's episode about Hawk pointing out the similarities between Doink and Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons.

Borne had crazy hair and always had a cigarette in his hand when he wasn't in front of the fans. Two things that may well have inspired McMahon to make Borne his Doink. Yes, McMahon infamously doesn't watch anything that isn't wrestling. However, The Simpsons was such a big deal throughout the 1990s, it seems likely the Doink seed, and having Borne play the role, was planted when McMahon saw Krusty.

Suspicious Circumstances

The most shocking twist of the episode came from Borne's daughter, Tegan. Speaking about her father a lot throughout, Tegan revealed she still believes Connie, a woman Borne met two years before he passed, played a part in her father's death. Tegan and Borne's wife, who he was separated from at the time of his death, claim he called the night before he died and said if he were to pass away, to not let it go.

That alone has naturally left Tegan still suspicious of Connie and what happened ten years later. The official cause of death was deemed an overdose and enlarged heart, a condition Borne knew about but kept under wraps. There are crossed wires regarding exactly what happened. Some claim Connie knew Borne was in trouble but left it hours before calling an ambulance. Also speaking on the show, Connie said it hurts her deeply that Tegan still thinks she played a part in Borne's death.
