Chris Jericho Planning To Make A Painmaker Movie

Writer Liam Parker

Chris Jericho has tried his hands at many ventures over the years, finding success in the vast majority of them. A pro wrestler, author, lead singer, podcast host, dancer, actor and more, Chris Jericho is looking to make another big venture into non-wrestling media. At the center of it all, Jericho believes that his Painmaker character has the legs to be the next big superhero smash hit on the big screen.

Chris Jericho Planning Painmaker Graphic Novel And Movies

Appearing as a guest on Howie Mandel Does Stuff this week, Chris Jericho got onto the topic of the Painmaker character he has dipped in and out of over the past few years, and outlined some big plans he has for the fedora-toting character.

"I wanted something a little bit more violent, like what would a serial killer look like if he was a pro wrestler," explained Jericho to Mandel. "I have seen so many Spider-Man, Batman, Superman movies, how many more characters are there in these universes?" Jericho added, "They're just making the same ones over and over again. Somebody somehow is going to have to create a new superhero, so, that's where the Painmaker came in".

As far as making these Painmaker projects a reality, Jericho gave an update on where the pieces currently lie. "We're just writing and illustrating the graphic novel now," the current ROH World Champion shared, detailing that "the Painmaker is an intergalactic former serial killer. He's changed his life and he's not a serial killer anymore but now he travels the galaxy hunting down other serial killers in different galaxies...But the flaw is that he still has to kill innocent people from time to time because it's just in his DNA."

Ultimately, Jericho has much more than comics on his mind. "The idea is to make it into a movie at some point. That's my overall goal," Jericho added, clearly with big plans for the character. "What if the Painmaker falls in love and then can't help himself enough to kill the one he loves? Who knows? The possibilities are endless." (h/t to F4WOnline for all the quotes)

Does The Painmaker Character Have The Legs For It?

Chris Jericho Painmaker

It is obvious that Chris Jericho thinks very highly of the Painmaker persona, one that he likes to dip into when feuds call for a more violent presence in the ring. Pro wrestling has seen no shortage of crossover characters, from anime and manga stars like Jushin "Thunder" Liger and Tiger Mask, to full on luchador celebrities like El Santo. But, does Painmaker have the magic to grab audiences outside pro wrestling?

The Painmaker character isn't universally beloved by wrestling fans as is. Chris Jericho's attempts at portraying a sadistic character with messy make-up can sometimes leave a bad taste in the mouth, his in-ring performance changing all that much at all outside of a few more weapons. Plus, as far as comics go, fans have been quick to point out flaws in the concept. The idea of an anti-hero like Jericho describes reeks of the edginess of the 1990s comicbooks that eventually floundered out of fashion, with other fans pointing out that Jericho's concept of an intergalactic killer is very close to exisiting DC's character Lobo.

With the right team behind it, the Painmaker could very well end up being a success in other forms of media. At the minute, Jericho is producing the projects with Semkhor, an NFT company. As NFTs continue to degrade and lose profitability, who knows if the Painmaker will make it out of the wrestling bubble.
