Asuka's 10 Best Matches, According To Dave Meltzer

Writer Emma Terry

Since her debut in 2015, Asuka has seen some ups and downs in WWE. At first, she was fantastic, going nearly two years undefeated and the most dominant NXT Women's Champion ever. However, her main roster run was hit by losses to Charlotte and even Carmella, and she was lost in the mix. She and Kari Sane were a good tag team, but Asuka suffered in the midcard too much before 2020 saw her becoming RAW Women's champion for a better run.

After months away, Asuka recently returned and is looking to once more dominate the ranks. She's had some good matches with Becky Lynch, among others, yet some of her battles have managed the rare feat of a women's wrestler who earns regular four-star ratings from Dave Meltzer. Here is how the Wrestling Observer rates The Empress of Tomorrow's best matches and shows her amazing star power even WWE hasn't been able to ruin.

10 Vs Emma, NXT TakeOver: London 2015: 4.00 Stars

Asuka Vs Emma

This highly underrated match may be Emma's best in NXT. She had dropped her goofy dancing persona for a heelish run and thus, there was a fire to her against Asuka. Dana Brooke was around to distract Asuka and let Emma get in some cheap shots to fire things up.

It was amazing to see Emma not only hanging with Asuka but even getting the advantage in a few places with some terrific wrestling. Asuka tapped Emma out, but the referee didn't see it. In the end, she hit a kick to win and end a match that deserves far more love.

9 Vs Bayley, NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 2 2016: 4.00 Stars

Bayley v Asuka NXT Brooklyn TakeOver Brooklyn II Cropped

After their wild TakeOver: Dallas match, Asuka and Bayley went at it in an even better battle. The pair went at it fast, with Bayley trying not to outwrestle Asuka but outthink her, with Asuka hitting back. Bayley showed more fire with a ten-ram into the buckle and daring Asuka to hit her harder.

They had several near falls as it almost looked like Bayley would reverse the Asuka Lock into a pin, but Asuka hit a kick to retain. It was Bayley's farewell to NXT and established Asuka's dominance.

8 Vs Nikki Cross, NXT June 28th, 2017: 4.00 Stars

Asuka vs Nikki Cross

A Last Woman Standing match against the wild Nikki Cross already promised some fun. As usual, the idea was Cross not only absorbed the punishment (like a dropkick with a garbage can over her head) but seemed to thrive off it to throw Asuka off.

They brawled all over, including a Powerbomb on a pack of chairs as each barely beat the ten count. Soon tables and a ladder were involved, with Asuka Superplexing Nikki off it through the announcer's table. That got her the win in a crazy war.

7 Vs Charlotte Flair, Wrestlemania 34: 4.00 Stars

Asuka V. Charlotte

This match has gained some controversy since but was still a top fight. Undefeated and coming off being the first woman to win the Royal Rumble, Asuka went into this match as the favorite against Charlotte. The pair had a sensational fight, the tide swapping a few times, with each pulling out their best moves.

Charlotte even went old-school with a Boston Crab as they fought it out on the floor. Charlotte then managed to break out the Figure Eight on one hand to get the win. Some may argue about her being the one to break Asuka's streak, but that shouldn't take away from what a great match it was.

6 Vs Becky Lynch, WWE RAW February 10th, 2020: 4.00 Stars

Becky Lynch v Asuka Raw May 16, 2022 Cropped

For a free TV match, this was a spectacular battle with Asuka challenging RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch. Kari Sane was backing Asuka and briefly got involved, but the focus was on the two women putting on a spectacular battle.

There were scores of near falls and each trying their trademark submission move only for the other to roll out of it. Lynch hit a Manhandle Slam to get the pin and cap off one of the best RAW Women's matches in a long time, as a teaser for later fights.

5 Vs Sasha Banks, Extreme Rules 2020: 4.00 Stars

Asuka v Sasha Banks Extreme Rules 2020 Cropped

Having been awarded the RAW Women's Title a bit earlier, Asuka got a major showcase defending against Sasha Banks with Kari Sane and Bayley at ringside. It was a terrific fight between the pair with Asuka going all out with her moves and Banks nicely matching her while Bayley and Sane threw in some interference.

The ending was odd as Asuka blinded the ref with green mist and was laid out with Bayley tossing on the ref shirt to make the three count. But aside from that ending, it was a top-level fight between the pair.

4 Vs Ember Moon, NXT TakeOver: Orlando: 4.25 Stars

Asuka Vs Ember Moon NXT TakeOver Orlando

This gem of a TakeOver battle started slowly with the pair trading moves and a standoff. But it picked up with Asuka hitting some hip attacks and wild chops to take control. The good dynamic was Moon managing to hold up with Asuka only for a sudden hit to take her down.

The back and forth was terrific, with Asuka mostly in control until Moon made a big comeback. However, Asuka shoved the ref into the ropes to avoid the Eclipse and then hit a nasty kick to retain the belt. It was a top battle that helped establish Asuka as a star.

3 Vs Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair WrestleMania Backlash 2021: 4.25 Stars

Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley

Coming off WrestleMania, Ripley was the RAW Women's Champion defending against Asuka and Charlotte at WrestleMania Backlash. Rather than let the other two wear each other down, Asuka took it to both with some nasty shots and the fun sight of all three on their knees taking chops on each other.

Asuka managed to counter the Riptide, so Charlotte could kick Ripley. Flair then countered the Asuka Lock only to get knocked out of the ring, so Ripley finished off Asuka. She ate the pin, yet Asuka still looked strong in this showing.

2 Vs Ember Moon, NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 3: 4.5 Stars

Asuka vs. Ember Moon (NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III, 8/19/2017)

Another stellar showdown between the two ladies highlighted this terrific TakeOver event. Once more, the focus was on Ember wearing Asuka down to hit the Eclipse with several power moves and nice reversals. It built to Moon getting the Eclipse but only a two-count, and thus no idea what to do next.

That left her open to Asuka getting the Asuka Lock for the win. This turned out to be Asuka's final NXT match due to an injury and her main roster call-up, but what a way to go out.

1 Vs Becky Lynch Vs Charlotte Flair, WWE TLC 2018: 4.5 stars

Becky Lynch Vs. Charlotte Flair Vs. Asuka Cropped

After months of lackluster treatment on the main roster, Asuka roared back to life with this stunning main event from TLC 2018. She, Charlotte and Lynch had one of the most brutally physical women's Ladder matches ever seen, with all three taking some nasty bumps and dives and putting themselves on the line for this war.

Ronda Rousey was the difference maker, pushing Charlotte and Lynch off the ladder so Asuka could scale it to win the SmackDown Women's Title.
