Professional Background
As an educator both in the inpatient setting and class, Dr. Abebe seeks to inspire, motivate, challenge and engage students at different levels of training to achieve their maximum potential. He has a passion for teaching, discuss and demonstrate on how to investigate complex problems, learning their mechanisms and uncovering their solutions. Dr. Abebe has an insatiable desire to learn and gets immense satisfaction from navigating and constructing the diagnostic work up of patients. He trained as a general internist and now works as a Hospitalist, a type of practice within internal medicine in which the clinical focus is caring for hospitalized patients. Through this role, he attempts to show learners on how when presented with a set of symptoms and physical findings, you can develop a broad differential diagnosis and ultimately come up with a plausible diagnosis. He intends to immerse his learners on when challenged by a problem that is unresolved, to seek the help of fellow colleagues, literature and medical resources to come up with an answer. In providing class room lectures, he likes to provide case scenarios that will reflect on what they will come across in real world and have them participate in the discussion, leaving time for interactive session.
Dr. Abebe translates on ways to connect with patients and value of maintaining rapport with his patients. He tries to promote and mentor students on how to develop team work, valuing all members of the team with intensive peer support and mentorship. He encourages the need to ask questions and share their opinion with their peers and class. His knack of finding common ground, regardless of an individual background, allows him to establish strong and lasting relationship with his learners.
Last but not least is to always demonstrate on how to build upon the deeper appreciation of the values of optimism, determination and resilience in learning. Dr. Abebe will devote time to share on how to remain motivated and enthusiastic learner, as is he.
