8 Things Fans Didn't Know About Lita's Time In ECW
Liam Parker
Lita is genuinely one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time, let alone a bonafide women's wrestling revolutionary who gave them legitimacy and credibility at a time when skimpy clothes and risqué segments were part and parcel of the division. The four-time Women's Champion is deservedly in the WWE Hall of Fame, and fans continue loving and supporting her body of work.

While followers mainly remember the real-life Amy Dumas for her exploits in WWE alongside the likes of real-life best friends Trish Stratus, Molly Holly, and Victoria, Lita had runs in Mexico and the independent scene as well. However, there is one phase of her career, when she performed in ECW, that fans don't remember much about.
8 Paul Heyman Approached Lita
Under the name Angelica, Lita worked various indie dates and for promotions like Maryland Championship Wrestling (MCW), where she even managed Christopher Daniels, and NWA Mid-Atlantic, where she first met Matt and Jeff Hardy.
This is when the owner and booker of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), Paul Heyman, approached her about working for his promotion. And Lita agreed to come on board.
7 Trained with, likely dated Danny Doring
Lita made her ECW debut as the valet for Danny Doring and Roadkill under the name Miss Congeniality. From April to October 1999, she managed the duo and was also the on-screen girlfriend of Doring.
Apparently, their reel life mirrored their real life, and while Doring and Lita hit it off well, Roadkill was not her biggest fan. There were also rumors that the former two dated at that time, as explained in the next entry.
6 Changed In-Ring Name Amidst A Proposal Angle
At Heat Wave on July 18, 1999, Miss Congeniality appeared under her new in-ring name, Angelica, which she used before joining ECW. As part of their storyline, Danny Doring proposed to her with a condom during this PPV.

However, Angelica would soon leave ECW for WWE, where she would achieve stratospheric success, so nothing much came out of this angle.
5 Last ECW Appearance
Lita's last appearance for the extreme promotion came on October 23, 1999, at the Re-enter the Sandman live event. The show had this name because ECW legend Sandman was making his return to ECW there. After the second bout, Danny Doring, Roadkill, and Angelica were confronted in the ring by Cyrus, who had an offer to trade the debuting Elektra for the former Mists Congeniality.
Doring then told Angelica he had no intention of marrying her and that he had cheated on her, and promptly received a slap from her. Danny then gave her a double arm DDT while Roadkill hit a diving splash on the future Lita. Angelica got stretchered out of the ring, thus bringing an end to her ECW run, with Elektra replacing her as Doring and Roadkill's valet.
4 Lita Trained Under Dory Funk, Jr
ECW legend RVD was the one who introduced her to veteran wrestler Dory Funk, Jr., who invited Lita to attend his wrestling school, The Funkin' Conservatory. The then-Angelica took up that offer, attending Funk's school with 23 men and graduating in August 1999.
She then returned to ECW to continue her role as Danny Doring and Roadkill's valet while also getting more in-ring time. Little did she know that her time training under the former NWA standout would bear more fruit than just learning the ropes of pro wrestling.
3 Funk Had Her Footage Sent To WWE
When she was training at The Funkin' Conservatory, Dory Funk, Jr. and his wife created video footage of her work and sent it to WWE. The Federation had been watching Lita closely at that point, and they were sufficiently impressed.

On August 1, 1999, WWE signed Lita to a developmental deal, meaning she would end her stint with ECW after six short but personally impactful months. This also meant that the Florida native had achieved her ambition of one day signing for Vince McMahon's juggernaut of an organization.
2 The Ridiculous Rumors That Followed Her Around In ECW
Lita has had quite a few partners who were fellow professional wrestlers across her storied career. And this 'reputation' seemed to give her a bad time during her time in ECW, where quite a lot of rumors did the rounds about her dating life. Dubious stories were circulated that linked the future wrestling star to ECW mainstays like Axl Rotten, Steve Corino, Hack Myers, and CW Anderson.
This all also happened at the same time that she was apparently dating Danny Doring. The Queen of Extreme has never acknowledged any of these rumors, nor have any of the men she was allegedly involved with. While such stories must always be taken with a grain of salt, it is safe to say that in Lita's case, it is mostly some deluded fan/colleague who came up with such rumors.
1 ECW As Part Of Her 'Kid Power' Days
Lita has openly admitted that her high-risk wrestling style was not for everyone and that she herself knew it was a matter of time that she may get injured. She has referred to this phase as her ‘kid power’ time.

Especially during her time with ECW, Lita has admitted that she was always on the 'verge of a catastrophe' because she wanted to keep improving and catch the attention of her dream promotion, WWE. She said:
“Up until I broke my neck in 2002, I had what I refer to as ‘kid power.’ I just lived my life and there were pianos falling behind and it was like on the verge of a catastrophe. I knew that there was lot of talent there and I could learn. They were No. 3 in the big 3 promotions. I wanted to learn, but I had my eyes set on going to WWE.”
Talk about high risk, high reward!
