6 Shocking Wrestlers You Can't Believe Did A Canadian Destroyer

Writer Owen Barnes

During the mid-2000s, Petey Williams blew away wrestling fans when he showed off his Canadian Destroyer finishing move. In an era where TNA's X Division was having consistently great matches with wrestlers showcasing incredible moves and feats of athleticism, this bit of offense was so good that Williams stood out from the rest of the crowded field.

Doing a front-flip piledriver may not be the most realistic wrestling move ever but it has a flair for the dramatic and looks awesome. You can totally expect athletic wrestlers to do it considering the flipping aspect, so when the likes of Rey Mysterio or Penta El Zero Miedo do one, it makes complete sense. However, as the Canadian Destroyer has become more common, those who do it have become more unexpected.

6 Chelsea Green

Chelsea Green

Of everyone listed who pulled off a Canadian Destroyer, Chelsea Green is likely the most athletic. However, it was still surprising when she did it for a handful of reasons. For one, the move hasn't been done by a ton of women on television yet. Many could certainly hit one (like Bianca Belair, Tay Conti, or Charlotte Flair) but it still hadn't happened much yet. Also, this was never the kind of style that Green wrestled.

Her matches were more predicated on character work than flashy moves. As Laurel Van Ness in Impact, she was wild and as Chelsea Green in NXT, she was poised. The Canadian Destroyer never fit the bill for her, yet she still delivered one at All In. Interestingly enough, Green was actually given permission to use the move by Petey Williams himself.

5 Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny WrestleMania 37

Plenty of celebrities have stepped into a wrestling ring over the years but only a handful have managed to actually perform at a high level. One of the best to do so was Bad Bunny, who competed at WrestleMania 37 with Damian Priest against The Miz and John Morrison. It helped that Bunny was a longtime WWE fan, so he took things seriously and wanted to do well.

Bad Bunny arguably stole the show on a night full of stars. Along with selling a beating well, he hit some impressive offensive moves. None stood out more than the Canadian Destroyer that he nailed on the outside, showing the kind of athleticism and precision you wouldn't expect from someone who is a musician and not an everyday wrestler.

4 Buff Bagwell

Buff Bagwell

In his prime, Buff Bagwell was seen as one of the more athletic guys on the WCW roster, especially in tag teams. In a land filled with guys past their prime, Bagwell could do things that not many others could pull off, with the most notable being his Blockbuster finisher, which involved a front flip off the top rope. The idea that he would've been able to hit a Canadian Destroyer in 1998 or around that time isn't unheard of.

What makes Buff Bagwell's Canadian Destroyer so out there was that he did it way after he was at his best. In 2014, Bagwell hit one while competing for Absolute Intense Wrestling. At that point, Bagwell hadn't wrestled consistently on a big stage for over a decade. The man he hit with the move was Ethan Page, who has recently been shining for All Elite Wrestling.

3 Marty Jannetty

Marty Jannetty

One of the wildest shows each year is Joey Janela's Spring Break. Before Janela competed for AEW, he would run a pretty unique event during WrestleMania weekend. Spring Break would feature the likes of Gangrel, Dan Severn, and Dink, and even had a match where an invisible man took part.

In 2017, Janela went one-on-one with Marty Jannetty, who fans hadn't seen in action in a long time. Though he was a high flyer in his heyday, that was far from 2017, so seeing Jannetty deliver a Canadian Destroyer to Joey Janela was certainly not what anyone expected.

2 Ricky Morton

Ricky Morton

There's no doubt that The Rock n' Roll Express are among the greatest tag teams to ever set foot in a ring. After being icons of the '80s, they somewhat disappeared for the next couple of decades, only to re-emerge during the 2010s. Their success carried over into 2019, where they even won the NWA Tag Team Titles again, despite being in their 60s.

They may not look like they can still go but they've surprised a lot of fans. Their most high-profile appearance was likely when they showed up in AEW. While there, Ricky Morton busted out a version of the Canadian Destroyer. Though he had help with it, you can't deny how impressive it was. Morton also did the move on other shows as well.

1 Virgil

virgil wrestler

The only time that fans seemed to believe that Virgil had solid athletic skills was in the early '90s. He would hit pretty good dropkicks and a few other moves but unfortunately, Virgil was never really known to be a star performer in the ring. That was even more true when he worked as Vincent in WCW.

He's now most known for asking for high prices to get his autograph or as Soultrain Jones in segments for the Inner Circle. Virgil, like Marty Jannetty, competed against Joey Janela when he hit his Canadian Destroyer. It was likely the slowest one ever done but it's still mind-boggling that he did it.
