5 Wrestlers Who Thrived After Lucha Underground Ended (& 5 Who Have Struggled)
Michael Hansen
Lucha Underground was a fun alternative to all the major wrestling promotions since they loved to think outside of the box. Many of the top masked wrestlers from Mexico brought their Lucha libre style to the United States for the show filmed like a movie. LU featured cinematic matches, supernatural characters and was just visually portrayed as, unlike any other wrestling show.

The biggest success for LU was the number of top-level talents who spent time in the company. Legends like Rey Mysterio and top stars like John Morrison accomplished a lot, but it was mostly the rising stars who did the best. Find out which names have gone either way since spending their time in the promotion. The following talents have either thrived or struggled since their time in Lucha Underground ended.
10 Thrived: Ricochet
The signing of Ricochet by Lucha Underground saw him playing the character of Prince Puma. LU tried to make him the face of the company with the unique mask and backstory presenting him as the ultimate fan favorite.

Ricochet’s career took off a little while after he separated himself from the Prince Puma character. NJPW pushed Ricochet as a top junior and WWE signed him with a relatively successful run so far.
9 Struggled: Sexy Star
Another original signing of Lucha Underground to build the show around was Sexy Star. The wrestling background in Mexico saw her having a lot of talent and enough experience to get such an opportunity.
Sexy Star did find success in LU, but things fell apart shortly after. An incident saw her intentionally injuring Rosemary during a match due to personal issues. Various people in wrestling like Cody Rhodes and Road Dogg stated they’d never work with her leading to the industry blacklisting her.
8 Thrived: Io Shirai
The rise of Io Shirai in NXT has seen her become a major star. However, Shirai did have some experience in another United States-based promotion when working for Lucha Underground in the later seasons.
LU deserves credit for finding new stars with great potential. Shirai didn’t have many major storylines for LU, but she showed her overall talent. WWE signed Io shortly after and has now made her a huge part of the women’s division.
7 Struggled: Son of Havoc
Matt Cross had a breakout run as Son of Havoc for Lucha Underground wrestling under a mask. The long journey of Cross saw him finally showcasing his skills on a national wrestling television show with the new gimmick.
Unfortunately, Cross has not been able to get used by major promotions since LU fell off. The first All In event did feature Cross in the opening match, but he has not been brought into any of the AEW events since the promotion started.
6 Thrived: Karrion Kross
The momentum of Karrion Kross as Killer Kross started off in Lucha Underground. Kross was unlike anyone else with both an intimidating presence and the character work that allowed him to show range.
Impact Wrestling made Kross one of their biggest stars afterward, but he’s being used even better in NXT right now. Karrion and his girlfriend Scarlett Bordeaux have become one of the top NXT acts with him thriving in the main event scene.
5 Struggled: Ivelisse
Lucha Underground did a good job of establishing their female performers in various roles from managers to wrestlers. Ivelisse was one of the top wrestlers to compete against both male and female talents.

Various personal issues and offensive comments on social media prevented Ivelisse from getting any major opportunities moving forward. AEW recently used Ivelisse, but negative fan reaction all but confirmed she won’t get signed.
4 Thrived: Taya Valkyrie
The career of Taya Valkyrie started to take off when getting her push in Lucha Underground. Valkyrie trained with Lance Storm and had great potential to get spotlighted on the show against both male and female talents.
John Morrison and Taya met in LU before falling in love and eventually getting married. Valkyrie moved on to become the longest-reigning Knockouts Champion in Impact history. The success of Taya has made her one of the top women’s wrestlers in the world.
3 Struggled: Vampiro
Many fans were reintroduced to Vampiro for the first time since WCW when working for Lucha Underground as a color commentator. Vampiro commented on the shows, helped backstage, and even wrestled a few matches.
The older veteran still had enough left in the tank to get fans invested in his storylines. Vampiro has admitted he tried to get an AEW job after LU ended, but there was no interest. Time will tell if he can get another shot with a major company on screen as he is a backstage employee for AAA these days.
2 Thrived: Pentagon Jr.
The brothers of Rey Fenix and Pentagon Jr. benefited the most from Lucha Underground. Pentagon specifically got over in the first season with his unique wrestling style leading to amazing results.
Impact Wrestling even trusted him enough to put the World Championship on him during his time there. AEW signed both Pentagon and Fenix as a tag team, but Pentagon has achieved a little more on his own to get the top spot.
1 Struggled: Marty the Moth
Marty the Moth was among the most impressive new stars to get a chance in Lucha Underground. The character work allowed him to showcase his interesting persona with layers that gave him strong heel heat.
Life after LU has not seen Marty used in many relevant promotions. The end of the show caused quite a few talented wrestlers to make their next move. Marty is still hoping to have a bigger impact through one of the television promotions.
