5 Ways Angel Garza Is The Next Eddie Guerrero (& 5 Ways Sammy Guevara Is)
Sophia Bowman
The tragic, untimely loss of Eddie Guerrero in 2005 left a pretty huge hole in pro wrestling. Thanks to his work in WCW and WWE, Guerrero was a top heel and one of the most prominent Latino pro wrestlers in the English speaking wrestling world. And ever since, any time a new Latino heel starts rising through the ranks of the majors, wrestling fans start talking about their potential to be the next Eddie Guerrero.

Right now, there are two candidates on fans’ minds: Angel Garza of WWE and Sammy Guevara, who’s been generating a lot of buzz through his work on AEW. There are compelling arguments for both wrestlers being the next Eddie Guerrero, so let’s evaluate.
10 Angel Garza: Pro Wrestling Royalty
Family can play a strong role in a pro wrestler’s development. Eddie Guerrero, for example, comes from the family that produced Chavo Guerrero as well as Chavo Jr. Similarly, Angel Garza also hails from a notable pro wrestling family -- one that produced WCW’s Hector Garza as well as fellow WWE up-and-comer Humberto Carillo. Those parallels alone can give fans the sense that Garza actually has the potential to be the next Eddie Guerrero.
9 Sammy Guevara: No Expectations
To Sammy Guevara’s credit, he doesn’t come from any sort of wrestling dynasty. He’s just a kid from Houston, TX who came out of Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling school and started making a big splash on the indies, which higher profile work with Lucha Underground and AAA. Now that he’s in AEW, he can develop in front of one of the widest audiences possible in wrestling -- and could benefit without the expectations of someone like Angel Garza.
8 Angel Garza: Has a Lucha Rival
A strong wrestler can be made even stronger with a great rivalry, and Eddie Guerrero had a lot of rivalries, most notably with eternal lucha babyface Rey Mysterio Jr. Both Guerrero and Mysterio were great on their own, but together their rivalry enhanced their respective effectiveness as heels and babyfaces.

Angel Garza has his own lucha babyface to contend with in the form of his own cousin, Humberto Carillo. The familial bond could actually prove even more powerful than the Mysterio/Guerrero rivalry.
7 Sammy Guevara: Making His Own History
It sometimes feels like Angel Garza has the legacy of Eddie Guerrero thrust upon him by WWE, so someone like Sammy Guevara doing his own thing over in AEW is refreshing. Rather be “A potential top Latino heel to fill Eddie’s shoes,” Sammy Guevara is this overconfident high-flyer who can’t sing and keeps getting chased by various conveyances during wrestling matches. It’s likely that Guevara will be remembered differently than “pushed as the new Eddie.”
6 Angel Garza: Working with Eddie Guerrero’s Friend/Rival
To further the Eddie/Angel comparisons, as part of Zelina Vega’s stable of handsome heels, Angel Garza spent a lot of time recently wrestling Rey Mysterio Jr. alongside Andrade, another Mexican heel who’s often said to have potential to be the next Eddie Guerrero. If Angel Garza ever gets into a feud with Mysterio on his own, the association and parallels could really put Garza over the top as far as being a top Latino heel.
5 Sammy Guevara: Working with Eddie Guerrero’s OTHER Friend
On the other side of the fence, Sammy Guevara is working directly with a differentex-WCW cruiserweight in AEW. As part of Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle, Jericho has really taken Guevara under his wing and put him forward as his protege. Together, they form the tag team Le Sex Gods, where they can work together directly in the ring. Jericho is in the conversation with Guerrero as one of the greatest heels of all time, so there’s a strong possibility that Guevara could learn something from Le Champion.
4 Angel Garza: Already Gaining Accolades
While Sammy Guevara is generating buzz as part of the top heel faction of AEW, WWE has been quick to realize Angel Garza’s value. Not long after his initial impressive showing in the NXT Breakout Tournament, he ended up defeating Lio Rush for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

While that title reign was short-lived, it appears to be because he was being moved up to the main roster, where he can be regularly seen on Raw nearly every week.
3 Sammy Guevara: Being Entertaining
Sammy Guevara hasn’t accomplished a whole lot in AEW yet, but he’s been massively entertaining. From his cue card style messages during commercials to his extraordinarily bad karaoke rendition of Chris Jericho’s entrance music and his being chased by both a golf cart and a horse, Guevara is proving to be one of the most hilarious wrestlers on the roster. Being entertaining is one of the best ways to win over wrestling fans, and Sammy Guevara could use that buzz as a springboard to even greater things.
2 Angel Garza: In-Ring Psychology
Angel Garza is no doubt a great wrestler, but one of his greatest weapons is psychology. It’s a key thing for any heel to have, and Garza is extremely skilled at it. His “I’m devastatingly handsome and I know it” attitude is a great way to get on a crowd’s bad side, and his gimmick where he strategically rips away his pants to reveal he’s wearing trunks underneath is a great bit of in-ring psychology to disarm an opponent.
1 Sammy Guevara: Great High Flyer
Despite being a heel, Sammy Guevara still maintains much of his high-flying moveset. After all, the best way to win over fans who don’t know who you are is “doing cool moves.” He’s only in his mid-twenties, so the former AAA World Cruiserweight Champion's body is still capable of doing lots of crazy moves and dangerous-looking spots while wrestling fellow daredevil wrestlers like Darby Allin. Combine that with his willingness to entertain and it’s possible that Sammy Guevara could be the next Eddie Guerrero without trying too hard to draw the comparison.
