5 Things That Should Happen At NJPW & AEW's “The Forbidden Door” Event (& 5 That Shouldn’t)
Sophia Bowman
NJPW and AEW’s upcoming PPV is perhaps the most highly anticipated pro wrestling show in recent memory. With two all-star lineups coming head to head in one of AEW’s home base cities, sparks are surely going to fly. Fans will have the chance to witness some incredible matchups, and possibly some long-awaited reunions.

With anticipation being as high as it is, there’s a lot of pressure on both companies to deliver. Here are five things that can help make a great show, and five things that should be avoided if the Forbidden Door is to live up to the hype.
10 SHOULDN’T: IMPACT Gets Involved
Three’s a crowd. Given how disappointing the opening of the “forbidden door” between AEW and IMPACT was, it’s probably for the best that IMPACT sits this one out. A show between AEW and NJPW has more than enough hype behind it without any matches even being announced. IMPACT coming in to throw their “main eventers” into the mix would bloat the card.
9 SHOULD: FTR Challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Titles
What could be greater than 6-Star FTR? 7-Star FTR, of course. Cash and Dax are in a very unique position; at the moment, they’re the only tag team to have held the Raw, Smackdown, NXT, ROH, AAA, and AEW Tag Team Championships. They’ll likely be the only team to do that, ever. FTR should seize every opportunity to cement their legacy as one of the best tag teams of all time. Capturing the IWGP Tag Team Titles would undoubtedly give them a huge boost in this endeavor.
8 SHOULDN’T: Enzo Amore Shows Up
The last time NJPW ran a joint show with an American promotion was the G1 Supercard of Honor in 2019. While it was a decent show overall (in front of a sold-out crowd, thanks to Jay White), there was a notable blunder. This came when former WWE superstars Enzo Amore and Big Cass came out of the crowd and jumped Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa during their match.
The incident caused a lot of confusion from fans and ultimately fizzled out in an extremely underwhelming angle. It’s highly doubtful that anyone from NJPW or AEW is hitting Enzo’s line at the moment, but I think they’d be best to avoid a repeat of the incident, anyway.
7 SHOULD: Women Of STARDOM Face The Women Of AEW
The parent company of NJPW, Bushiroad, also owns the all-womens’ promotion Stardom. Since NJPW has an all-men’s roster, there are no available dream matchups for the AEW women’s roster. Pulling in some of Stardom’s top wrestlers, such as Tam Nakano, Mayu Iwatani, and Giulia would allow the women to get in on the fun, too.
A lot of women in AEW, like Nyla Rose, Toni Storm, and Thunder Rosa, have done tours in Japan. Others are Japanese themselves and are surely capable of putting on some Joshi-style classics.
6 SHOULDN’T: A Chris Jericho Singles Match
To be blunt, Jericho had his chance to put on classics against NJPW stars. Arguably his best match in New Japan was his Intercontinental Title match against Kenny Omega. Jericho had a lackluster match against Kazuchika Okada, one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of NJPW, which doesn’t speak well of Jericho’s potential future matches.
On AEW’s part, the Forbidden Door should be about showcasing wrestlers who are either very special to the NJPW fan base or wowing them with some new faces. Jericho should be benched unless it’s for a multi-man tag match with the JAS.
5 SHOULD: Los Ingobernables Reunite
As a lot of fans already know, Tetsuya Naito’s faction, Los Ingobernables de Japon, is the Japanese branch of Los Ingobernables, a faction created in CMLL. The original members of Los Ingobernables were Rush and La Sombra, now known as Andrade El Idolo.
An in-ring reunion between Andrade and Naito would not only be very wholesome but would also show AEW fans that the connections between AEW and New Japan trace back much farther than that infamous door does.
4 SHOULDN’T: Omega vs. Okada V
This is a controversial take. However, with Kenny Omega just returning from injury, if he’s even ready in time for June 26, AEW shouldn’t immediately throw him into what’s likely one of the biggest titans of a dream match ever.

The Omega/Okada series is a perfect saga of matches that tells a complete story within its four matches. It would be best left untouched as the masterpiece it is unless AEW and NJPW lent the proper build to a fifth match.
3 SHOULD: CM Punk vs. KENTA
CM Punk and KENTA have a lot of beef considering they’ve never had a match against each other. All of it stems from the fact that KENTA claims Punk stole his signature move, the G2S. Whether the heat between them is legitimate or not is only known by the two wrestlers, but Kenta certainly plays it up like he’s pissed on Twitter.
This match would not only be a dream match between two of the most influential veterans of pro wrestling’s current generation but would also give them an outlet to squash this beef once and for all.
2 SHOULDN’T: Title Unifications
This is another thing that’s very unlikely to happen, but stranger things have happened in the world of pro wrestling. While it would be incredible to see NJPW’s world champion (at this moment, Kazuchika Okada) face the AEW World Champ (at this moment, Hangman Page), it should be an exhibition match. Title unifications bring on some messy ramifications when they happen in WWE, and for AEW and NJPW they would be even worse. If anything, maybe they could introduce an inter-promotional championship. All in all, though, AEW and NJPW need to keep their titles to themselves (except the IWGP US Title. It makes sense for that belt to be sent to America, after all).
1 SHOULD: A Golden Lovers Reunion
Despite his absence from AEW TV, Kenny Omega remains one of the most anticipated appearances at the Forbidden Door PPV. He made a name for himself in NJPW, and his appearance at the Forbidden Door would be a homecoming as much as it’d be a crossover.

Kenny coming through the Forbidden Door would also give him the chance to reunite with one of the most influential men in his career, his old partner, Kota Ibushi. A reunion between Omega and Ibushi would give the Forbidden Door a fairytale feeling. It’d be a treasured moment fans wouldn’t soon forget.
