Andre The Giant is an icon in the wrestling world due to his size and stature. He was larger than life and was a huge attraction for any wrestling promotion he worked for. Andre worked as a babyface for the majority of his career, due to his lovable personality leading to a big friendly giant-esque gimmick.

However, his most memorable run with WWE was when he turned heel. As he turned on Hulk Hogan, resulting in the iconic Wrestlemania III match-up. This was towards the end of Andre's career when he was in a lot of pain, therefore, working as a heel was beneficial.
10 Babyface: Connection With The Audience
Andre was massively over with audiences worldwide as a babyface. His immense stature and squash match victories were adored by wrestling fans resulting in him naturally being a loveable babyface.

It was easy for Andre to perform in this role as he connected with the audience and always interacted with them. As a heel, he was despised because he had never turned heel before and fans were heartbroken, speaking volumes of how good he was as a babyface.
9 Heel: Iconic Match With Hulk Hogan
Some matches are truly groundbreaking and everlasting. The bout between Hogan and Andre at Wrestlemania III is one of said matches. Working as a heel for the first time in his career, Andre turned on former friend Hulk Hogan to set up the battle.
The match between the two had sensational storytelling with Andre using clever heel tactics to outweigh his limited in-ring ability at that point. This all resulted in the iconic Hogan slam on Andre which never would have happened if Andre wasn't so good in his role.
8 Babyface: In-Ring Ability
This is an obvious one as Andre worked the majority of his career as a babyface. During the peak of his run, he was actually very solid within the ring. His matches with Antoni Inoki and Stan Hansen are brilliant.
Compare this to his run as a heel, which was towards the end of his career, and he could barely move, let alone wrestle. He had to resort to heel tactics such as bear hugging and using his size to his advantage to make a match watchable.
7 Heel: World Title Victory
Andre The Giant was undefeated for a staggering 15 years but never held the World Title. This is what resulted in his heel turn and eventually led to securing his first and only World Title reign.
Unfortunately, his reign only lasted mere moments as he sold it to Ted DiBiase. However, he was able to end Hogan's four-year title reign and get the much-earned reward of a World Title victory.
6 Babyface: Undefeated Streak
What made Andre so iconic was his aura as he was presented as a massive attraction. This resulted in him working mostly squash matches to pop the crowd due to how dominant Andre looked.

All the babyface squash victories continued to add up which resulted in a 15-year undefeated streak. It was a part of his face persona as he was loveable outside the ring, however, massively intimidating inside.
5 Heel: Putting Over Other Wrestlers
As a heel, Andre put over two of the most legendary wrestlers in WWE history. They were Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior who turned into megastars after feuding with him.
Hogan was already massively over but he moved into another stratosphere after his victory over Andre at Wrestlemania III, cementing his place in wrestling folklore as a result. This was also the case for Ultimate Warrior who beat Andre at various house shows to build up his reputation.
4 Babyface: Must-See Attraction
Every wrestling fan across the world wanted a ticket to a wrestling event including Andre The Giant. That was certainly the case during his run as a babyface as everyone wanted to cheer him on. and give him a huge pop during his matches.
Also, as a babyface, Andre made sure to spend more time with the crowd interacting with them by high giving the front row and posing. With his heel gimmick, he did not show care for the audience.
3 Heel: Immensely Intimidating
As a babyface, Andre sported his bright blue trunks and always had a smile plastered on his face. This wasn't exactly intimidating especially for someone of his size, therefore, when he turned heel the flip switched.
He moved to a black singlet and had a blank stare that looked genuinely terrifying. It was everything that Andre should have been presented as. He was an intimidating, monster-like figure.
2 Babyface: Riding Off Into The Sunset
Towards the end of his career, Andre was acting as a heel who was managed by Bobby Heenan. It was clear he didn't have long left and for him to go out as a heel being hated by fans felt wrong.

As a result, Andre turned on Heenan who was slapping him after losing the Tag Team Titles. It is another iconic moment in Andre's illustrious career and the perfect send-off for the loveable, friendly giant.
1 Heel: Wrestling Psychology
As stated above, Andre could barely work matches during his heel run due to the amount of pain he was in. This resulted in him using his immense wrestling psychology to make his matches work.
From bear hugs and huge chops to slowing down the pace of matches, he always made sure he always looked a threat. Andre was the master of working as a heel and playing it to his strengths.
