10 WWE Matches Vince McMahon Absolutely Hated

Writer Owen Barnes

Vince McMahon can sometimes be a hard man to please, and that has often been the case with many matches over the years in WWE. At times, even if fans think differently, there have been certain matches that McMahon has absolutely despised.

When looking at some of the matches mentioned here, it is quite easy to see why exactly McMahon was so against these bouts. His angst comes from a variety of reasons, from just one moment in a match that has rubbed him up the wrong way to the entire thing from the opening bell all the way to the finish.

10 Batista Vs. Chris Jericho

Batista vs Chris Jericho

During their 2008 feud for the World Heavyweight Championship, Batista and Chris Jericho found themselves inside a Steel Cage match on an episode of Monday Night Raw. WWE had entered the PG Era a few months before, meaning that blading was getting more and more frowned upon.

Without prior clearance, Batista bladed to add intensity to proceedings, but this caused mayhem. McMahon was furious, and he would fine Batista. He explained on the Talk Is Jericho podcast, “So my fine was $100,000? My heart dropped. I thought it would be like $25,000? When he said $100,000, I was just heartbroken. I literally think that he sucked the life out of me that day. I think that's the day that I knew things were never going to be the same." (h/t Wrestling Inc)

9 Ric Flair Vs. Randy Savage

Similarly to Batista and Chris Jericho, this WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 8 was looked down upon by Vince McMahon due to the use of blood. Ric Flair and Randy Savage had arguably the match of the night, but McMahon didn’t agree with this notion, and he was annoyed with the bout.

This whole thing seems even more silly when you consider that Bret Hart got away with it on the exact same show.

8 Cesaro Vs. Gran Metalik

In a random match on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown between Cesaro and Gran Metalik, McMahon was reportedly incensed backstage and wanted the match finished as soon as possible, with him even wanting it axed from the show.

It is hard to imagine Cesaro and Metalik having a bad match, so it is unclear what exactly McMahon was so vexed about.

7 Booker T Vs. Buff Bagwell

When WWE initially bought WCW, the idea was that the company would continue as its own brand and show. After a match between Booker T and Buff Bagwell which didn’t live up to McMahon’s standards, he nixed the idea.

This birthed the invasion angle, which was one of the most chaotic periods in WWE programming history.

6 Jeri-Show Vs. The Legacy

At Night Of Champions 2009, the team of Chris Jericho & Big Show took on Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase Jr for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles. Due to the slow pacing of this match, McMahon was unfavorable towards it.

It should be noted though that the blame should have been taken by him and others booking the show, as they should have expected this reaction seeing as this was two heel acts opening up a PPV against one another. The lack of a babyface team spelled disaster.

5 The Good Brothers Vs. The Revival

Dax Harwood recently opened up on a match between The Good Brothers and FTR (formerly The Revival) which Vince McMahon branded as the “worst match he had ever seen”.

On his podcast, Harwood explained, “We came to the back and he said, ‘Welp, that was absolutely the worst wrestling match I’ve ever seen in my entire life.’ The worst wrestling match he has ever seen. This man has been in the business for 50 years. This was the worst match he’s ever seen in his entire life.” (h/t Fightful)

4 Trish Stratus Vs. Mickie James

The match between Trish Stratus and Mickie James was arguably one of the best women’s matches at a WrestleMania prior to the women’s revolution, however, due to an infamous hand gesture used by James in the match, Vince McMahon was furious.

It can be understood as to why McMahon was annoyed, but given the storyline going in, and some of the content that had been on WWE programming when it comes to women’s wrestlers in the past, it felt a bit hypocritical for McMahon to have any annoyance at this.

3 Rhyno Vs. Tajiri

At a WWE live event, Rhyno and Tajiri had a match which was stopped halfway through by Vince McMahon due to him hating it so much. This was likely a surreal experience for both the wrestlers and fans in attendance at the house show.

After initially believing it to be a work, the two wrestlers quickly wrapped things up and the match ended. It should be noted though that McMahon surprisingly wasn’t overly angry with this one - he simply just wanted it to end and had seen enough.

2 Chris Jericho Vs. Kevin Owens

At WrestleMania 33, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens battled over the United States Championship in what was arguably the best built match on the card. With a poor placement and slower match pacing, it didn’t live up to expectations.

After the match, Owens sought McMahon’s opinion, who indicated that he didn’t like the match at all. There is footage of this on the WWE Network, and it is clear to see Owens’ own disappointment at the reaction from his boss.

1 Diesel Vs. British Bulldog

The In Your House 4: Great White North event was not a good one, and it was capped off with a slog of a main event between Diesel and The British Bulldog for the WWE Championship.

Vince McMahon was on commentary for this match, and if eye witnesses are to be believed, McMahon would throw down his headset in anger at what had occurred. A DQ finish in the main event of a PPV was never going to be a good thing, so it is hard to sympathize with McMahon, who booked the match.
