Maz Kanata was one of the best and most fascinating characters to come out of The Force Awakens. She is a character who is over nine hundred years old, who is Force-sensitive, and who is clearly wise but also has an edge in that she lives in and runs a castle full of smugglers. Maz fell victim though to the Disney's lack of a plan for their Star Wars sequel trilogy, being utterly cast aside in The Last Jedi, and having barely anything to do in The Rise Of Skywalker.

Since she is such an intriguing character, it is hopeful she gets exploration in further media. But the extent of wasted potential in developing Maz's character has left fans wanting a lot of answers. Here are ten unanswered questions we still have about Maz Kanata.

10 WHO IS HER HUSBAND?

In Star Wars: Complete Locations (a reference book), it is revealed Maz Kanata had a husband. They married before 34ABY, and the marriage did not last. Alongside that, he gave her a statue in her likeness that remained at the castle until its destruction.

And that pretty much sums up the extent of information we have about the mysterious husband of Maz. So, who is he? Why did the marriage not last? Was he another of Maz's species? Or perhaps a smuggler? The questions are vast and varied.

9 WHAT IS HER SPECIES?

The Star Wars galaxy is vast and expansive, full of stars, planets, institutions, and species of all shapes and sizes. From Ithorians and Wookies to Duros and Rodians, there are many notable species. Then you have those such as Yoda, Yaddle, and The Child, serving as self-contained mysteries all their own in terms of species.

Maz falls into the latter. She comes from Takodana, but her species is unknown, never seen in Star Wars before. Hopefully, some light is shed on it soon.

8 IS HER STORY IN COMMANDER CANON?

For a limited time in 2016, the mobile game Star Wars: Commander ran a promotion in the form of a series of missions titled "Maz's Objectives." The story within them goes that following the Battle of Yavin, Maz discovers the Empire has kept and collected a large amount of data on her, leading her to hire a mercenary to strike Imperial target sites to stop this.

The game itself is canon, but the missions were optional on the side of the campaign and were only available for a short amount of time. So, were they canon? Did Maz hire a mercenary to keep the Empire off her back? If not, how did Maz deal with the Empire, if she did at all?

7 WHICH FAMOUS JEDI DID SHE KNOW?

Maz Kanata was born in 973BBY and so has lived through the highs and lows of the Jedi Order. Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Visual Dictionary revealed she was indeed acquainted with members of the Jedi Order. But which Jedi?

It is incredibly likely she knew the similarly aged Yoda, but who else? She could have crossed paths with members of the Jedi High Council, such as Mace Windu, Plo Koon, or Yaddle, or perhaps she knew more Jedi from the High Republic era that fans are yet to meet.

6 WHICH BOUNTY HUNTERS AND SMUGGLERS HAS SHE ENCOUNTERED?

Maz is known as the 'pirate queen,' for her allowing traveling smugglers to reside in her castle, as long as they honored her rules. She also hosted pirates and other travelers.

It begs the question of which famous bounty hunters and smugglers she has come to know. Does she know Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes? Perhaps she has known the Fetts considering the logo frequented by Boba hangs outside her castle. Maybe even others from the famous Empire Strikes Back, or pirates like Hondo, or smugglers like Beckett. The possibilities are deeply intriguing.

5 HOW DID SHE MEET HAN AND CHEWBACCA?

The two smugglers Maz does know are the most famous, of course -- Han Solo and Chewbacca. It is evident through the trilogy that Maz is familiar with the duo, but does not reveal how they met.

Chewbacca was the reason Maz and Leia met, introducing Leia to Maz to help save Han from Jabba's castle. But the precise "how" of the fateful encounter remains unresolved.

4 WHAT IS THE EXTENT OF HER FORCE SENSITIVITY?

Maz Kanata revealed in The Force Awakens that she is well in touch with the Force, sensing things an ordinary being could not. There is even a cut deleted scene where she uses the Force to crumble a wall on stormtroopers.

So what is the extent of her Force use? Can she use it in terms of powers? To what extent, if any, has she studied it? It is a fascinating point that the trilogy failed to touch on.

3 WHERE DOES SHE LIVE?

Maz's residence is the castle on Takodana, a lakeside structure where she housed herself and those who traveled through the planet or were looking for Maz - such as Rey, Han, Finn, Chewie, and BB-8 in The Force Awakens.

That castle was destroyed in the same movie, though. In her next couple of appearances, the topic of where she has relocated does not come up. In The Rise Of Skywalker, she is at the Resistance base acting as an advisor, but where next?

2 WHY DID SHE CHOOSE NOT TO BE A JEDI?

With her Force sensitivity, Maz Kanata rejected the idea of becoming a Jedi. She is wise, skilled in the Force, and cares about the right cause. So why did she have no interest in becoming a Jedi?

Her lifestyle on Takodana is a logical reason, so too is just not wanting to be tied down by old rules. However, this is not confirmed, and having Maz herself talk about why she wanted to live the life she led would be a fascinating insight.

1 HOW, WHEN, AND WHERE DID SHE GET THE LIGHTSABER

One of the most consistently asked questions in the Star Wars fandom and has been since 2015 -- how did Maz get Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber?

The last time fans saw this particular saber, the Skywalker saber, was when Vader chopped off Luke's hand, and the saber fell down Cloud City in terms of the chronological timeline. So at what point, from who or where, and how did Maz manage to collect it? It is one of the trilogy's biggest unanswered questions.
