10 Most Powerful Muggles In The Franchise

Writer Liam Parker

While witches and wizards can bring the damage, these Muggles in the Harry Potter franchise show that no magic doesn't mean a lack of power.

A few muggles stand out as the most powerful throughout the Harry Potter franchise. Although muggles, compared to witches and wizards, are not nearly as powerful, they hold a power of their own that they use in various ways. But of course, a few muggles among them are the opposite of powerful, and it's shown through their personalities and multiple actions.

Some people in this list are included from other films in the franchise, like the break-away film Fantastic BeastsWhether a specific character is from Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts, they all work to prove their power in some way or another.

Marjorie Dursley

At the beginning of The Prisoner of Azkaban, Marge makes a cameo appearance where Harry accidentally turns her into a human balloon. She floats away despite Vernon's best efforts to prevent that.

Although Marjorie believes herself to be very powerful, her actions in belittling and bullying a 13-year-old boy prove otherwise. The way she behaves suggests that she thinks she is of high status, but in the end, she has little to no power as she floats away into the sky. She doesn't appear again in the films, which suggests that the intention of creating her character wasn't to create an entirely powerful one.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon is one of the most frustrating characters throughout the films, and he can physically do nothing to stop Harry from becoming the person he was always supposed to be. In the first film, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's StoneVernon attempts to keep Harry's Hogwarts letters from him by hiding them but ultimately fails when hundreds of letters appear at their door.

When Hagrid appears, Vernon does nothing to prevent him from taking Harry to Hogwarts, making him lose even more power at that moment. Later in Deathly Hallows—Part One, when the Dursley family leaves Harry behind at their house, he refuses to help Harry in any way, shape, or form. Ultimately, Vernon is a petty man who refuses to show any kindness towards Harry in the end and leaves him to his death, proving that he had little to no power in the first place.

Petunia Dursley

The wife of Vernon Dursley and mother of Dudley Dursley rack up as the eighth most powerful muggle in the Harry Potter franchise because she is slightly more powerful than Vernon. She's somewhat more powerful than Vernon because she is the one in the relationship who wears the pants.

Whatever Petunia says goes, which is evident through her hatred for her sister that mutates into her hatred for Harry. If it weren't for her disgust towards magical people, then Vernon wouldn't have nearly the same attitudes as he does towards Harry. Overall, Petunia is a hateful person whose power is rooted in bullying a child to make herself feel better about her status.

Mr. & Mrs. Granger

Moving onto a more positive family, the Grangers are the parents of Hermione Granger and a significant part of the muggle community. Even though dentists don't have that much power in the muggle world, they are parents of one of the most influential and intelligent witches ever to live (even if they can't remember it).

At the beginning of Deathly Hallows—Part One, before Hermione obliviates them, she talks about how they know something is going on in the magic world, and they are aware of the dark magic at hand. They aren't entirely oblivious to what's happening in the magic world and wholeheartedly support Hermione, especially when they first find out she was a witch when she got her letter at 11. All in all, Mr. and Mrs. Granger are lovely human beings whose kindness in raising such a wonderful daughter is their superpower in this world.

Dudley Dursley

Dudley Dursley, the cousin of Harry Potter and son of Petunia and Vernon Dudley, is perhaps the most selfish character in the franchise. However, unlike most of his many, he changes. This is evident in what he says to Harry at the beginning of Deathly Hallows Part—One. When his family decides to leave Harry at their home, something that was cut out of the film, Dudley apologizes to Harry for everything he did to him growing up.

This is a big moment for Dudley. It's a moment of realization and self-awareness, and it makes all the difference in who he is as a person. He becomes less selfish, kinder, and more powerful by doing this. He becomes more powerful because he has finally grown up and become a better person. It's clear he has learned from his past mistakes and hopefully won't make them again, which means that he has stepped into his power of personal growth.

Frank Bryce

Frank Bryce, the gardener for the Riddle family, appears at the beginning of The Goblet of Fire, where he is brutally murdered by Voldemort when he overhears their plans for killing Harry Potter. He perhaps has most of his power by association with one of the most powerful (and evil) wizards to ever walk the earth. However, he also has his power from his bravery in going to the Riddle house and learning that Voldemort is still alive.

Although he was wrongfully the prime suspect for the murder of the Riddle family (which was committed by Voldemort himself), he stays on the Riddle family grounds despite everything. He holds the power of doing so until his death.

The Prime Minister

One of the most powerful muggles in the franchise of Harry Potter is the muggle Prime Minister. For obvious reasons, the Prime Minister is one of the most powerful muggles in the UK, and this carries into the magical world because he knows about magic. Not only does he know about magic, but he's also kept up to date throughout the series on different magical events, such as Sirius Black escaping from Azkaban.

The only time the Prime Minister makes an appearance is in The Half-Blood Prince, where it is evident through his conversation with the Minister for Magic that he knows about magic and Azkaban. This makes him much more powerful than some of the muggles on this list.

Jacob Kowalski

Jacob Kowalski, friends of Newt and Queenie from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is easily one of the most powerful muggles on this list because of his bravery throughout Fantastic Beasts. After barely knowing Newt, he dives into the magical world and does anything in his power to help him to defeat evil magic forces.

His bravery is what brings him to the top of the list. Still, it's also because of his potential to do magical spells with his wand in Fantastic Beasts 3. This is one of the only times in the Harry Potter franchise that a muggle can use a wand successfully and create magic. Even though his memory is erased at the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, he finds his way back to Newt and persists regardless. This makes him one of the most powerful muggles ever to live, and in turn, makes him at the top of our list.

Tom Riddle Senior

Tom Riddle Sr in Harry Potter

Because of his son, the Dark Lord Voldemort, Tom Riddle Senior is nearly the most powerful muggle in the Harry Potter franchise. Not only is he powerful because of his son, but he's also powerful because of the affluence, money, and power he inherited from his parents.

Overall, Tom Riddle Senior is a rude and arrogant person that (probably) gets what he deserves in the end when Lord Voldemort murders him.

Mary Lou Barebone

The most powerful muggle is Mary Lou Barebone from the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. As the leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society (aka the Second Salemers), she holds an immense amount of power as she attempts to bring down all witches and wizards for good.

Mary Lou is an evil person with a deep hatred for the wizarding world. Even though she, luckily, fails, this doesn't erase the power she holds as someone who is a muggle posing an immense threat to the magical world.
