10 Most Disrespectful Moments In AEW History
Michael Hansen
In its four years of existence (and counting) All Elite Wrestling has presented itself as an alternative to WWE, delivering a pro wrestling product that feels different enough from its main competition. Its more freewheeling approach to televised wrestling product has not only some legitimately funny moments, but also some moments of surprising disrespect between performers.

While AEW’s history has been relatively short, there are already countless instances of wrestlers crossing the line to be disrespectful to their fellow wrestlers — in kayfabe, although many of these acts involve real life. Let’s take a look at 10 of these moments of disrespect.
10 Serena Deeb Breaks Hikaru Shida’s Statue (Dynamite, 10/6/2021)
Thanks to her basically carrying the women’s division during the Pandemic era, Hikaru Shida ended up being on track to become the first woman to reach 50 wins in AEW. For her 50th match, she was booked to face Serena Deeb, with the expectation of Shida’s win being so strong that AEW was set to present her with a trophy. However, it didn’t pan out that way, at least for this match — not only did Serena Deeb score a surprise victory over Hikaru Shida, but she also broke the trophy by hitting Shida with it.
9 Eddie Kingston Catches Some Strays From CM Punk (Dynamite, 8/17/2022)
Less than a month ahead of the All Out 2022 pay-per-view, CM Punk cut a fiery promo on Jon Moxley, his opponent at the now-infamous PPV. During this segment, Punk didn’t just take shots at the Interim Champion Moxley, but also decided to come for Mox’s buddy, Eddie Kingston, who Punk feuded with nearly a year prior. Briefly focusing on his Full Gear 2021 opponent, CM Punk said that Eddie Kingston wasn’t just the third best Eddie (referring to Guerrero and Vegas), but also the second-best Kingston he shared a locker room with (referring to Kofi).
8 Christian Cage Goes After Jungle Boy’s Dad (Dynamite 6/22/2022)
After about a year of associating with “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry and Luchasaurus, Christian Cage did what he does best — engage in some deeply hateable treachery. If convincing Luchasaurus to turn on Jungle Boy wasn’t enough, Cage went even further by making it personal with his former protege.

Jungle Boy’s father was the late actor Luke Perry, so Christian of course decided to disrespect young Jack Perry over that, stating that he wasn’t Jungle Boy’s father figure, because he had a father and he died.
7 Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal Steal A Golden Globe (Rampage, 1/13/2023)
In pro wrestling, it’s not uncommon for a celebrity guest to get involved in the action, and in January 2023 2023 actor Paul Walter Hauser got involved in AEW following his Golden Globe win for his role in Blackbird. On Rampage, incessant bad guys Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, and Satnam Singh went a step further than many heels who interact with celebrities by not only assaulting Hauser, but also stealing his Golden Globe. Since then, Jarrett and company have been using the award statue as a weapon in matches.
6 Excalibur Clowns Michael Nakazawa (AEW Dark, 1/5/2021)
Once it found its footing, the YouTube series AEW Dark became a cult favorite among fans thanks to the breezy, playful commentary team of Excalibur and Taz, who often make jokes to derail one another during matches. However, one of the most hilariously disrespectful moments on Dark happened before a match. While doing voiceover over a matchup graphic — a bout between Sammy and oiled-up goofball Michael Nakazawa — Excalibur decided to make light of Nakazawa’s chances of coming out on top, referring to him as “Michael Not Gonna Win.”
5 Brandi Rhodes Bruises Ethan Page’s Ego (AEW Dynamite, 2/2/2022)
During her time in AEW, Brandi Rhodes ended up proving a controversial figure, drawing the ire of fans for reasons that in retrospect seem kind of mean spirited and questionable. Regardless, she had her moments in AEW, including during a promo segment against American Top Team affiliate “All Ego” Ethan Page. Targeting every tag team specialist’s weak spot, Brandi went for the jugular by saying that AEW only hired him to get to Page’s old Impact Wrestling tag team partner in The North, Josh Alexander.
4 Andrade Thinks Darby Is Sting’s Employee (Rampage 1/7/2022)
Fans haven’t seen much of him lately, but Andrade El Idolo was a load of fun when he regularly showed up in AEW as a self-absorbed heel who didn’t see people as anything but commodities he could exploit. This bit reached its apex once he began to feud with Sting and Darby Allin.

The most (hilariously) disrespectful moment in this storyline happened in its early days on an early January 2022 episode of Rampage. While being interviewed by Tony Schiavone, Andrade asked “why does this little kid work for Sting?” thinking that Allin was some kind of employee of the Stinger.
3 The Elite Mock CM Punk In Chicago (Dynamite, 11/23/2022)
The aforementioned All Out 2022 went down in infamy thanks to its post-show press conference and subsequent (legitimate) brawl between CM Punk and The Elite, that got everyone involved suspended. After returning a few months later, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks ended up wrestling a match against Death Triangle in Punk’s hometown of Chicago. Knowing that the crowd was full of devout Punk fans, The Elite elected to openly mock CM Punk by doing his signature moves and even intentionally messing up a Buckshot Lariat attempt, as Punk did himself once.
2 Orange Cassidy vs. Will Ospreay (Forbidden Door, 6/26/2022)
For many wrestling fans, Will Ospreay is one of the best wrestlers in the world, a former high-flying junior heavyweight who’s moved on to putting on epic heavyweight spectacles with New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s top talent. For the big AEW vs. NJPW show Forbidden Door, Ospreay was booked against Orange Cassidy, whose comedic approach to wrestling tends to annoy so-called “purists.” The bout proved to be a perfect matchup, as Cassidy’s kayfabe nonchalance similarly annoyed Ospreay. It’s tough to imagine anything more disrespectful than Orange Cassidy not caring about fighting a guy as acclaimed as Will Ospreay.
1 MJF Trashes Brian Pillman Jr.’s Mom (Dynamite, 9/8/2021)
Season Three of Vice’s pro wrestling documentary series Dark Side of the Ring prominently featured AEW star Brian Pillman Jr. in the episode focused on the tragic story of his father, Brian Pillman. When AEW came to Pillman’s hometown of Cincinnati, Pillman Jr. got a decent amount of spotlight, which included a short feud with MJF. Of course, MJF’s shtick involves flagrant personal attacks, and Pillman Jr. was no exception. MJF focused not only on Pillman’s dad, but also on his mother, the now-late Melanie, making light of her drug problems by nicknaming her “Methanie” on live television.
