10 Harsh Realities Fans Of John Cena Need To Realize
Isabella Bartlett
John Cena is one of the most notable and successful WWE wrestlers of all time. With a record number of world championship victories and a stint atop the mountain in WWE longer than most, he has carved out a remarkable legacy in the business which makes him among the Mount Rushmore of WWE stars.

When it comes to Cena, not everything has been absolutely perfect though, and even those who have been hugely passionate fans of Cena over the years must come to realize some harsh realities about his time in WWE. He has had a legendary run, but there are some down points for sure.
10 Played A Part In Ruining The Summer Of Punk
There are many names at blame for the failure of the Summer of Punk including Vince McMahon, Triple H, and Kevin Nash, but WWE’s booking of John Cena around this time was a big factor in the failure of Punk’s super push in 2011.
Punk could never beat Cena clean, with asterisks on his two victories at Money in the Bank and SummerSlam. Additionally, WWE still wanted Cena as the top star and continued to be booked in the main event scene, winning back the WWE Title during this period too.
9 Feud With Randy Orton Was Not Legendary
WWE has liked to paint the John Cena vs. Randy Orton feud as an all-time great along with the likes of Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart, Steve Austin vs. The Rock, and more. However, it was never even close to the quality of those rivalries.
The personal side of Orton vs. Cena didn’t feel heated, the feuds just went from beat to beat without much development, and their list of “classics” is very low, if not non-existent. It was very underwhelming and fans got sick of seeing them wrestle after a while.
8 Ruined Money In The Bank Concept
The Money in the Bank was working as a concept for several years as one of the most exciting parts of WWE TV. However, it started to go downhill when John Cena won the briefcase. It should be something to make stars, but Cena became an established name who won the briefcase, opening the door for many former world champions to then win the match.
Cena would be the first to be unsuccessful in his cash-in, opening the door for this too. Cena would go on to defeat Damian Sandow during his cash-in the following year in a complete waste, ruining his potential as a main eventer. Since then, more wrestlers have lost in their cash-in, and many top names have become Mr or Miss Money in the Bank even though they never needed the briefcase.
7 One Of The Worst WrestleMania Main Events
John Cena has been in several WrestleMania main events, but he has been involved in one of the worst ever. WrestleMania main events should be the biggest match on the card, but unfortunately WrestleMania 27 saw a match that not many people were excited to see.

The Miz defended the WWE Title against John Cena in a bland, basic main event which was used only to help build the following year’s main event between Cena and The Rock. It is among the poorest main events of all time for sure.
6 Terrible As An Anti-Authority Babyface
WWE wanted to make John Cena likable, but it never quite worked out during his prime amongst many of the WWE Universe. He was given some anti-authority storylines on occasion in an attempt to get fans on side, but these just never worked. Fans could see through it, and Cena simply didn’t fit the bill of an anti-authority figure.
Feuds against John Laurinaitis, Vince McMahon, and Triple H were all hugely underwhelming and did not work as WWE intended. Cena could not pull off this role convincingly either.
5 United States Title Open Challenge Was Wasted
Fans have fond memories of John Cena’s 2015 United States Championship run, which saw Cena have some different matches against new opponents, elevating the US Title. However, it must be said that some of the feuds during this time weren’t as good as many remember, and they mostly only served to help Cena.
Cena would defeat Kevin Owens, Rusev, and Seth Rollins (who was WWE Champion) in his US Title defenses, but would end up finally losing to… Alberto Del Rio. When you consider all the names who stepped up to face Cena, losing in quick fashion to Del Rio was a complete waste of time.
4 Too Many World Title Victories
John Cena won a world title in WWE on 16 occasions - more than anyone else in WWE history. This record is matched by Ric Flair’s multiple world titles inside and outside of WWE, and the company was clearly pushed by this target and made Cena match it.
However, many of Cena’s reigns were short and pointless, and they felt like they were just done for the sake of pumping up his tally. Only a handful of Cena’s reigns were actually memorable, and it really felt like there were too many world title victories over his career.
3 Halted The Push Of Other Talents
Over the years there have been several names who John Cena has defeated, and many younger or more popular names who have fallen to the wayside in favor of Cena getting pushed. Additionally, there have been certain individuals who have had to take a backseat with Cena getting the spotlight, even though he didn’t defeat them directly.
The likes of Wade Barrett, Damian Sandow, Ryback, Zack Ryder, Rusev, Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus, Kevin Owens, CM Punk, and the list goes on when it comes to names who have played second fiddle.
2 Not Many Wrestlers Ever Truly Beat John Cena
It is true that some wrestlers have defeated John Cena, but more often than not, Cena has gotten his win back and won the feud in the end. This has been the case with CM Punk, Batista, Bray Wyatt, Edge, Wade Barrett, and many, many more.

Those who have decisively put over is a much shorter list, including names like Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, and… Austin Theory. It can be argued that WWE chose the wrong names to go over Cena, as many other names would’ve benefited.
1 A Heel Turn Should’ve Happened
On one hand it is admirable that WWE and John Cena never pulled the plug on a heel turn, and it was due to him being the ultimate good guy both inside and outside the ring. When looking back though, a heel turn should’ve happened at least once.
Whether it was a descent into darkness brought about by someone like Bray Wyatt or Cena turning off his own back, it would have promised some glorious content. When the likes of Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin turned heel it was a major moment, and it would’ve been iconic if Cena had turned.
