10 Harsh Realities Fans Of Hulk Hogan Need To Realize

Writer Matthew Cannon

The name value of Hulk Hogan still sees him as arguably the most recognizable wrestling personality many decades after his prime. Hogan completely changed the landscape of both WWE and WCW with each company reaching new heights with him in the top spot. However, that doesn’t mean that everything about Hogan is perfect by any means.

Fans of Hogan sometimes overlook the negative moments or generally surprising things about his career. Harsh realities are something that everyone in the public eye has that fans don’t always care to process. The following things about Hogan’s career can be considered those harsh realities that his biggest fans avoid.

10 Struggled Before Heel Turn In WCW

The Hulk Hogan signing by WCW completely changed the landscape to have them feeling like they were ready to compete with WWE. Hogan turning heel to form the New World Order made WCW the hottest entity in pro wrestling, but fans often overlook the struggles before that run.

WCW tried to continue the Hulkamania babyface gimmick that had mixed results. The first few Hogan WCW PPVs did huge business, but it started to grow stale since he had over a decade with that act in WWE. Some WCW fans even booed Hogan to inspire Eric Bischoff pitching the heel turn.

9 In Many All-Time Bad Matches

Hulk Hogan is considered the superstar of all superstars in WWE history, but he was noticeably worse than most legends to follow him. Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, John Cena and Roman Reigns were just a handful of top WWE stars that had significantly better matches than Hogan.

It becomes even more glaring when seeing Hogan is in some of the all-time worst matches from an in-ring quality. Hogan had infamously bad matches against the likes of Ultimate Warrior, The Giant, Sid Vicious and even Triple H to show his biggest weakness.

8 Randy Savage & Roddy Piper Were Better All-Around Performers

The WWE and WCW tenures of Hulk Hogan saw two familiar names always right behind him in the pecking order. Most fans would name Randy Savage and Roddy Piper right behind Hogan when listing the top legends of the Golden Era of wrestling.

Diehard fans actually viewed Savage and Piper above Hogan due to their entertainment value. The in-ring matches and the promos from both guys showed they were better all-around performers than Hogan. WWE lucked out from Hogan being the right character for the role he was placed in to lead the company.

7 Huge Culprit Of Nepotism

Nepotism is one of the worst things in wrestling if it leads to friends and family of a top star not being worthy of their opportunities. Hulk Hogan was the first legend that loved to utilize his power and influence to get his buddies hired.

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, Horace Hogan, Garett Bischoff and the Nasty Boys were just a short list of wrestlers pushed due to him. Hulk went further down the nepotism track when he conned TNA into hiring his pop singer daughter Brooke Hogan to be an important character with no real experience.

6 Kevin Nash Was Cooler NWO Leader

The New World Order became the hottest act in wrestling thanks to the trio of Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Even though the coolness of Hall and Nash set up the angle, Hogan’s shocking heel turn gets credited most for the group becoming must-watch television.

WCW eventually split the NWO into two unique factions of the Hollywood and Wolfpac sides. Nash became arguably the most beloved babyface in the company during this time. Fans viewed Nash as being much cooler than Hogan to get the face version of the NWO over rather quickly.

5 Comeback WWE Championship Reign Flopped

Hulk Hogan coming back to WWE in 2002 sparked many interesting twists and elements to this run. WWE initially wanted a heel Hogan leading the New World Order, but that just didn’t work out as planned when started to cheer him.

The desire to see the return of Hulkamania for the first time in WWE since 199 led to a huge babyface push. Hogan won the WWE Championship from Triple H to take advantage of his momentum, but that’s where he jumped the shark. The horrible main event matches exposed Hogan’s age as no longer being world champion material.

4 Failed Acting Career

The success of wrestlers in acting today sees The Rock, John Cena and Batista as all leading mainstream actors in blockbuster films. Hulk Hogan tried to create that blueprint in the 1980s and 1990s by chasing the acting dream when that was unheard of for wrestlers.

The acting career of Hogan flopped with most of his movies becoming jokes. Hogan tried to claim he had stronger opposition in top action roles than today’s wrestler, but he also lacked as an actor. Not even the peak years of Hogan being a wrestling icon led to much success at the box office.

3 Responsible For Bad Ideas

Hulk Hogan loved to use his power to impact the on-screen product by coming up with his ideas. Quite a few Hogan ideas showed that he was a horrible creative. Hogan inspired the idea of the Dungeon of Doom faction to feud with him and for Big Show to play Andre the Giant’s son as the payoff angle.

WCW had more terrible ideas from Hogan than WWE did since he had the creative control clause for his own angles. Hogan coming up with the idea of feuding with Brutus Beefcake or Ultimate Warrior further showed that he should be criticized for bringing weak angles to television.

2 Played A Huge Role In TNA's Downfall

Many Hulk Hogan fans overlook the TNA stint since it was almost all failure. Dixie Carter offered Hogan a tremendous deal to help run the on-screen product. Hogan and Eric Bischoff talked Dixie into thinking TNA would be able to compete with WWE like they did with their WCW time.

Most decisions made by Hogan ruined any momentum TNA had before he joined. Fans felt the product no longer appealed to them since Hogan made it clear he didn’t respect anything TNA did before him. The company hit the point of never being a realistic threat to WWE after the Hogan run doomed TNA.

1 Biggest Ego In Wrestling History

The biggest argument against Hulk Hogan in wrestling always comes back to his ego. Hogan cared about every little thing in how he was portrayed as the top star in the industry. Names like Bret Hart, Sting and Billy Kidman saw Hogan wanting to put them over clean if hurting his own reputation.

Hogan made the backstage aspects of wrestling toxic at many times since he had enough power to make life difficult for others. Many wrestlers had a negative opinion of Hogan and felt better not working in the same company as him due to his ego.
