10 Best World Heavyweight Champions In WWE History, Ranked

Writer Emma Terry

The original World Heavyweight Championship was originally introduced to WWE fans in 2002 when Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff brought the title to the red brand as Brock Lesnar moved from Raw to SmackDown and the WWE Championship became exclusive to SmackDown. Unquestionably, the WWE Championship is the more prestigious, but winning the World Heavyweight Championship was a big deal.

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Champions In The History Of "Big Gold" World Heavyweight Championship
The "Big Gold Belt" is one of the most prestigious titles in wrestling history. There have been several amazing champions, but also a few bad ones.

The iconic Big Gold Belt was back in operation once again as it was the former WCW World Heavyweight Championship, and it was used alongside the WWE Championship as the Undisputed WWE Championship in late 2001 and early 2002. The World Heavyweight Championship was active for 11 years from 2002-2013, and the title was brought back a decade later albeit under a different lineage. There have been several World Heavyweight Champions who were better champions than others.

Cena's first World Heavyweight Championship reign was his best as he successfully retained the title against the likes of Chris Jericho and JBL. He dropped the title to Edge in an Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out 2009. Cena did a decent job as World Heavyweight Champion, but his exploits as WWE Champion were a lot better.

Orton's reign was cut short by his former Evolution mentor Triple H dethroning him for a title a month later.

It would take Orton almost seven years to hold the Big Gold Belt once more. The Viper had an outstanding feud with Christian over the World Heavyweight Championship where the pair traded the title. Orton became the final World Heavyweight Champion as he saw off John Cena in a title unification TLC match in 2013 to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

The Animal dethroned Triple H for his first World Heavyweight Championship run at WrestleMania 21. Batista cemented his spot as one of the top names in the business as he beat the Game in three matches in succession. Heaven alone knows how long he would have held the title had he not sustained a tricep injury.

Batista's second World Heavyweight Championship reign lasted 126 days after he finally dethroned the title from King Booker. Batista's final World Heavyweight Championship reign was just eight days long when he traded the gold with Chris Jericho.

Triple H became the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion on the September 2, 2002 edition of Raw when Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff awarded him the title. The Game was the perfect choice to be the inaugural titleholder to get this new World Championship established.

The Game was a five-time World Heavyweight Champion and collectively, he held the title for 616 days which is the longest. Furthermore, Triple H had Evolution by his side who ensured that he'd retain the World Heavyweight Championship. Fans grew tired of Triple H's vice grip on the title as he prevented the likes of Rob Van Dam and Booker T from clinching the Big Gold Belt.
