10 Best Amazon Prime Original Horror Movies (According To Rotten Tomatoes)

Writer Daniel Cobb

Amazon Prime has released some very worthy, original horror films. Not all meet the mark, but some have a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Amazon Prime Video would be a win even if it was just an additional feature with a Prime membership. But, instead of being something to accompany two-day shipping, Prime Video was always a treasure trove for underground horror movies from past and present.

As it turns out, the streamer has gone on to distribute some of its own excellent original horror films, several of which were part of an anthology film series from Blumhouse Productions. Like Netflix, Prime Video is a hodgepodge of original projects and classics, and, now, installments of the former feel like perfect additions to the collection of the latter.

10 Evil Eye (2020): 44%

Unlike the highest-grossing Blumhouse movies, such as Halloween (79%) and Get Out (98%), Welcome to the Blumhouse's Evil Eye wasn't exactly a hit with critics.

The more negative reviews pointed at the film's delving into melodrama, while positive marks were frequently directed towards the cast. This is particularly true of Sarita Choudhury's lead performance as Usha, a woman who comes to believe her daughter's new boyfriend has sinister motivations towards them both. The performance of Omar Maskati as Sandeep, the boyfriend, was also widely-praised.

9 The Neon Demon (2016): 58%

Easily one of the more subversive Elle Fanning moviesThe Neon Demon is a Nicolas Winding Refn film that easily fits in with his Only God Forgives. Both are challenging films buoyed by fine performances, yet neither quite hit the mark.

Fanning stars as Jesse, an aspiring Los Angeles model who becomes a sensation in her desired industry. Unfortunately, her success breeds jealousy from others, perhaps even to a deadly extent. Alongside Fanning, the cast is rounded out by Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote, Christina Hendricks, and Keanu Reeves.

8 Nocturne (2020): 62%

Featuring Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's Madison Iseman, Nocturne was the fourth entry in Welcome to the Blumhouse's anthological film series. It was also arguably one of the most successful of the eight, even if many critics did find it a little too reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. However, plenty found something positive to say about Sweeney's lead performance.

The film follows a senior year music student at a top-tier arts academy who envies her increasingly accomplished twin sister. Then, when she finds a deceased classmate's notebook, the dynamic finds itself reversed.

7 The Manor (2021): 62%

Barbara Hershey in The Manor

The best movies like The Manor go for subtlety, the slow build. Featuring Barbara Hershey of Insidious, Axelle Carolyn's movie is the eighth and, to date, final, installment in the Welcome to the Blumhouse anthology film series. Hershey and Bruce Davison (X-Men) star as two residents of a quiet nursing home. The former begins experiencing scary visions, which no one else believes to be real. Unfortunately, this disbelief persists when residents start mysteriously dying.

There is a trend on Rotten Tomatoes when it comes to the Blumhouse anthology movies; Namely, the Tomatometer being twice as high as the audience. In this case, 62% to 31%. The critical side is fairly consistent with the production company's theatrical features, but the audience score is far lower.

6 Bingo Hell (2021): 63%

Richard Brake in Bingo Hell

Bingo Hell, the fifth entry in Blumhouse's anthological film series, features Richard Brake (Mandy) as sinister casino owner Mr. Big. When he takes over and drastically expands a group of elderly friends' favorite bingo hall, it isn't long before both his motives and insidious potential are revealed.

Audiences only liked it about half as much as critics, who called it a smart social satire piece. However, the general consensus stands that Bingo Hell isn't the scariest film on Amazon Prime, even if it does have some excellent practical effects.

5 Suspiria (2018): 65%

Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria is a remake of the 1977 Dario Argento classic by the same name. While the response wasn't quite on par with the original film, critics were enamored with the film's beautiful cinematography and performances.

More than one critic compared the film to the work of director David Cronenberg, the master of body horror, which is a fitting comparison considering Suspiria (either version) features imagery that is certainly not for the faint of heart viewer.

4 Madres (2021): 67%

Madres was very negatively received by some, including Screen Rant, but it has its proponents on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly enough, the film's Tomatometer rating of 67% Fresh far exceeds its Rotten audience score of 40%. Many critics cited how the seventh Welcome to the Blumhouse film didn't quite go for scares, but it did pull off some effective social commentary.

The film follows a young Mexican-American couple, who are both expectant parents and new residents of California. Beto goes out to his new job while Diana explores the property, but she might not like everything she finds.

3 Black Box (2020): 70%

The second film from Welcome to the Blumouse is arguably the best of all eight, as Black Box is a package with a moving plot and believable, compelling performances. The plot follows single father Nolan Wright, who agrees to an experimental procedure for amnesia. His memory has been decimated ever since the car accident that also took his wife, but the procedure to gain what's been lost could cost Wright everything he has left.

Critics tended to point at the movie's emotional resonance more than its ability to scare, but the fact remains that it's another critically-praised movie from Jason Blum.

2 Black As Night (2021): 70%

Arguably one of the best Amazon prime original movies from 2021Black as Night is the sixth installment of the eight-part Welcome to the Blumhouse anthology film series. The plot follows four New Orleans teens who spend a summer hunting vampires.

Tomatometer and Audience Scores aren't everything, but Black as Night has an interesting disparity between the two. In this case, 70% of critics liked it while "exactly" half as many audience members enjoyed it at 35%.

1 Master (2022): 75%

Master stars Scary Movie's Regina Hall as Gail Bishop, the first Black headmaster of an elite New England university. The university, Ancaster, has an ugly history, but the worst may not be in the past.

Holding a Certified Fresh 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, Master was often praised for its intelligence and depth. However, its audience score is much lower at 40 percent. It stands to reason that the audience was looking for a straightforward chiller, but critical reviews are quick to point out that, while it has its similarities to Jordan Peele's films, it's nowhere near as scary.
